Call for miners’ arrest review is welcomed

Calls for an independent investigation into the convictions of almost 500 Scottish miners during the 1984-85 strike are being backed by representatives of East Lothian’s former mining communities.

Lothians MSP Neil Findlay and Midlothian MP David Hamilton – a former miner who spent two months in jail for his part in the strikes - have written to the Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill MSP urging him to instigate a comprehensive review of each of the convictions made during the dispute.

They have also written to David Strang, Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police.

East Lothian MP Fiona O’Donnell and county MSP Iain Gray are now supporting the plea by their Labour colleagues and have also written to Mr MacAskill and Mr Strang.

The politicians’ call comes after it emerged that some police statements in England during the period of the strike may have been manipulated, possibly leading to wrongful arrests and convictions.
