Call for action to shut Haddington’s closes longer

A community councillor is calling for gates at Haddington’s town centre closes to be locked for longer in a bid to stop ongoing problems with antisocial behaviour.

Charles Ingle, who lives at Ross’s Close, said people were using the area for “illegal and salacious activities,” claiming the prescribed drug Temazepam was being sold.

He told the monthly meeting of the community council that closes in the High Street and Lodge Street operated on time lock gates between 7pm and 2am.

Mr Ingle explained: “Getting these gates put in place has been a long time coming and when they are locked they are very effective, and allow the people who live in Ross’s Close, The Butts, Langriggs and associated areas peace and quiet from the problems they experienced before the gates were put in place - the antisocial behaviour people have had to experience. When they are not closed, there continues to be problems.”
