Bus service for rail station

A change has been made to a local bus service following an article in the News which highlighted parking problems at Drem rail station.

The North Berwick to Haddington 121 services, operated by Prentice Coaches, now arrives at Drem at 6.20pm to meet anyone arriving by train from Edinburgh at 6.11pm.

Following the article, local bus action group RELBUS said it made the suggestion that, if the timings were right, some people could take the bus to the station.

Although most local buses are tied up in school runs at the end of weekdays, Prentice Coaches were able to make the small change to its service and, it is understood, has noted a significant rise in passengers already.

RELBUS believes that this all resulted from a discussion between East Lothian Council and the operator under a new process whereby so-called “supported” bus services were reviewed twice yearly in the light of passenger and other feedback. It is planned that this will include a period of public consultation too via East Lothian Council’s new Consultation Hub.

Barry Turner (pictured), RELBUS chairman, said: “This is welcome news and a small step in the right direction. We commend East Lothian Council and Prentice for working this one out.

“It should encourage a modal shift from car to bus and reduce the need for additional parking at Drem. In time we want to see many more buses connecting with the trains right across the county, a move we think East Lothian residents and visitors alike will support.”

Prentice Coaches have also announced that they have been given a six star rating for safety after becoming one of around 50 founder companies - just seven from Scotland - to be accepted into the BUSK Benchmark scheme which is a first for the UK. Coach firms have to undergo a rigorous inspection process including submitting three years worth of maintenance records, showing that drivers all hold ‘Enhanced Disclose Scotland’ certificates and providing evidence that staff get periodic training.
