Burgh pub is bowled over
The Volunteer Arms (Staggs) 81 North High Street, Musselburgh
Super Bowl fans at a Musselburgh pub are raising their glasses after it received the go-ahead to extend its licensing hours until 4am to enable them to watch the American football championship on the big screen.
The Volunteer Arms (Staggs) in North High Street will welcome between 20 and 30 enthusiasts, including police officers, on the night of February 3 and 4 at the ticket only event.
Publican Nigel Finlay told a meeting of East Lothian Licensing Board that he had been approached by customers - a police sergeant and his friends - who wanted to watch the game on the big screen in the back lounge.
He asked if the the pub’s licensing hours could be increased from midnight until 4am, expecting his plea to be turned down as it was not the board’s policy.
Inspector Robert Rodriguez acknowledged that the premises were very well-run but stressed that the extension was “considerably” outwith the board’s policy and could set a precedent for future applications for sporting events.
