Burgh beach hailed as one of best in country

Campaigners in Fisherrow are celebrating the award of bathing beach status to Musselburgh’s popular Back Sands.

They hope that the newfound recognition as one of the country’s top beaches can be used as a springboard for the regeneration of the seafront and harbour areas.

The European Bathing Water Directive recently confirmed that the stretch of sand west of the harbour - the town’s main beach - had achieved the high standards required to make it a safe place to swim and play.

It joins only 83 beaches in Scotland to be awarded bathing water quality status.
