Budget D-Day on Tuesday February 9

East Lothian Council will set its budget and rents on Tuesday February 9.

The key meeting, at which cuts in services are expected, will take place at 10am in the Town House, Haddington.

The SNP/Lib Dem administration will put forward its budget for approval and presentations will also be made by the Labour, Conservative and Independent groups.

An item on the agenda is a verbal report 'Rent Increase: Consultation with Tenants' which will be given by Monica Patterson, executive director of community services.

Expenditure

David Spilsbury, head of finance, stated in a Financial Strategy Statement which will go before the special council meeting: "The council faces a wide range of risks and an increasingly difficult financial environment.

"For General Services, in the short and medium term expenditure is outstripping income and the council's main source of fiscal independence, the Council Tax, has an uncertain future.

"In the longer-term, pension liabilities are increasing and should be funded now rather than passed on as a burden for future taxpayers.

Disposal

"But these challenges are faced from a comparatively strong financial position.

"The council has a signficant sum of reserves at its disposal that it can use to deal with these challenges in the coming years."
