Bringing a touch of colour to the historic Greywalls near Muirfield, Gullane
James Harrigan - Greywalls through the Flowers
Greywalls, which operates as a hotel near Muirfield golf course at Gullane, has been immortalised by 10 artists in a new book.
The only intact house in Scotland designed by the foremost Edwardian architect Edwin Lutyens, it is situated next to the venue for this year’s Open golf championship.
The book ‘Greywalls: A Hidden Gem’ charts the story of the historic building and its famous guests.
The creative project blossomed two years ago as a result of conversations between the book’s author Roy McGregor and Giles Weaver whose family has owned the house since 1924.
Greywalls was built in 1901 for Sir Alfred Lyttleton as a holiday home. A keen golfer, Sir Alfred wanted his house to be within a “mashie niblick” of the 18th hole at Muirfield. The garden is attributed to world famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, a long-time collaborator of Lutyens.
