Break-in to house in North Berwick

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses following a break-in to a house in North Berwick at New Year.

The incident happened sometime between 10.30pm on Hogmanay and 1.30am on New Year’s Day at an address in South Hamilton Road, North Berwick.

The homeowners had been attending a party and returned to find their property had been entered and searched.

However, no items appear to have been taken.

In the past few weeks, police have received a number of reports in North Berwick and the surrounding areas of people being spotted within garden areas attempting to open sheds, garages and house doors.

Officers are now urging anyone who sees anything suspicious to contact police immediately and to ensure they have appropriate home security measures in place.

A police spokesman said: “It was very unpleasant experience for the homeowners at South Hamilton Place to return from their New Year celebrations and find their home had been broken into.

“Fortunately nothing was taken and we are keen to speak with anyone who can help us trace those responsible.

“A number of reports have been made recently of people seen acting suspiciously in and around properties across East Lothian and we want the public to make sure their homes are safeguarded against would-be thieves.

“Always ensure your doors and windows are locked securely and any valuables inside are stored safely out of view.

“Garages and sheds should also be secured to protect items kept outside. Additional measures such as lighting and CCTV cameras may also be prudent if and when possible.

“For further crime prevention advice contact your local policing team or visit our website at www.lbp.police.uk.”
