Bogus caller warning in North Berwick

Police are appealing for information following a bogus caller incident in North Berwick yesterday (Tuesday).

A woman attempted to gain access to a house in Dirleton Avenue about 6pm on September 18 after claiming to be the elderly resident’s new carer. It was only when the woman explained she was not expecting anyone that the woman left.

Door to door inquiries confirmed the woman had approached other properties in the street.

The suspect is described as being in her 20s, medium build with brown hair in a ponytail and was wearing a lilac-coloured uniform.

A police spokesman said: “We are appealing for anyone who may recognise the description of the woman involved to contact us on 0131 311 3131.

“Furthermore, we would always encourage people to ask for identification before granting someone new access to their house - anyone genuine will not mind being challenged, and will be happy to provide details for you to double check.”

Cllr Donald Grant, East Lothian Council’s spokesman for Health and Social Care, said: “East Lothian Council staff always carry and show their identification when visiting clients. I would ask anyone who is at all concerned to immediately report such incidents.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
