Blooming great award win for gardener Matt
Garden Retail Awards.
An East Lothian horticulturalist has picked up a top accolade after changing his career direction.
Matthew Lowe, plant area assistant at Merryhatton Garden Centre, East Fortune, won the Westland Star of the Future award at the Garden Retail Awards.
Chosen from entrants from across the UK, the 21-year old was singled out for the garden industry ‘Oscar’ for “displaying great ambition, innovation and drive to become a leader of tomorrow.”
Matt from Whitekirk, was put forward for the award by colleagues at the garden centre.
Owner Helen MacDonald said: “We felt he fitted the bill perfectly. In under two years, Matt has progressed from being a seasonal worker at Merryhatton to become a lead member of our plant team. When he started working at Merryhatton he was studying geology at university.
“He discovered a love of gardening that lead to a major change of career direction including a switch to an honours degree in horticulture at the Scottish Agricultural College.”
