A waste recycling firm has been allowed another year to finish embankments around its site at the former Smeaton coal bing near Whitecraig after work was hampered by wet weather.

Hamilton Waste and Recycling has also been given the go-ahead, amidst five public objections, to change the profiling of the earth bunds at its waste recycling facility at Crossgatehall which will include raising the height and gradients of some of them.

Proposals to make the main sorting shed bigger and use an area for open storage of materials prior to recycling were also approved unanimously at a meeting of East Lothian Council’s planning committee on Tuesday.

Convener Norman Hampshire (pictured) said: “The work that has been done to the facility there has been substantial and the finishings on most of the areas are a massive improvement to that location.”

But he urged completion of the development as soon as possible, adding: “Continued disturbance to the people living around needs to be minimised.”
