'Big surprise' for judge as he is made CBE

An East Lothian judge has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

The Honourable Lord Colin Jack Tyre, who was president of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe in 2007, received the award for services to the administration of justice.

He is now a judge at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, having been appointed in May, and as such ceases to be a QC.

Children

Lord Tyre (54), who originally comes from Dunoon where he went to school, has lived in East Lothian for 21 years, for six years at Dirleton and now Tynefield between East Linton and Dunbar.

He and his wife Elaine have three children Kirsty (23), Catriona (21) and Euan (18).

Asked how he felt about receiving a CBE, the graduate of Edinburgh University said: "It was certainly a big surprise and great honour."
