Back with a bang! Dunbar’s gun is returned

An official handover ceremony to mark the return of a refurbished gun, installed as a lasting memorial of the part played by the Artillery in the history of Dunbar, was held.
The 25-pounder field gun or howitzer – which was introduced into service just before the Second World War – had to be removed from its seafront location in the town for a five-month maintenance project following years of exposure to North Sea weather conditions.
The weapon is now back at the Glebe in Bayswell Road after its facelift by kind-hearted gunners from 105th Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers).
The joint project by the regiment, MTS Recovery Repair (Stirling), Dunbar Community Council and East Lothian Council came about when Regimental Sergeant Major Mark Paterson was approached by a member of the Royal Artillery Association, who mentioned the gun, which was on public display, was in poor condition after years of wear and tear.
