Historical watchdogs have defended their controversial decision not to object to a 20 metre high wind turbine next to Dirleton Castle.

They were grilled by angry protestors at a public meeting, organised by Gullane Area Community Council, which attracted a 25-strong crowd to Aberlady Stables last week.

But Alastair Martindale, Historic Scotland’s head of heritage management east, and archaeologist Rory McDonald, senior heritage management officer of ancient monuments east, stood by the Scottish Government agency’s stance not to oppose the wind turbine installed at Castlemains Farm beside the fortress which dates back to the 13th century.

The clash came in the same week Councillor Tim Day, North Berwick Coastal, slammed a decision by a Scottish Government reporter to grant planning permission for a wind turbine of more than 66 metres at West Fortune Farm near Drem. This, he added, was despite the application being rejected by 11 votes to one by East Lothian Council’s planning committee.
