Anger at closure of council office

Community councillors in North Berwick are up in arms at the planned closure of the council office, known locally as the Beehive.

Community councillor Jim Goodfellow asked council leader Daavid Berry what was going to happen to the registration service which he gathered was going to be centralised in Haddington and Musselburgh.

Mr Berry said: "As far as I am aware there might be registration but there won't be a permanent base of registration."

Impact

He emphasised that couples would still be able to marry in the council chambers in Quality Street.

Community council chairman Mrs Pat Burton said: "If you make it difficult for people to marry in North Berwick it is not going to happen and it also impacts on all the other facilities that go with weddings — flowers, hotels, catering."
