American coin tribute to conservationist John Muir

The first of the John Muir Californian quarters has arrived in Dunbar. The specially struck 25 cent coin was in a presentation package of American state coins sent to Jim Thompson, convener of the Dunbar John Muir Association, by its designer Garrett Burke.

The quarter, which features Dunbar-born Muir against the Yosemite Valley, was officially launched by California's movie star governor Arnold Schwarzenegger at Sacramento last Monday.

Muir, described as the 'Father of Conservation,' emigrated to America with his family and founded national parks.

Mr Thompson said it was hoped to get more sets of the coins which would be presented to MSP John Home Robertson, Councillor Norman Hampshire and Will Collin who is an authority on the life of John Muir.

The coin will go on display in the John Muir Birthplace. Association member Joe Fontaine, who lives in California, is also expected to send a parcel of quarters.
