All set for Dunbar SciFest

Dunbar is gearing up for its award-winning SciFest which will take place on Saturday, March 16, and Sunday, March 17.

The event will be held at the John Muir Campus of Dunbar Primary School and the town’s Bleachingfield Centre from 10am until 5pm on both days.

The science festival has proved so popular that it has been running all week.

More than 80 parents, many who are scientists themselves, volunteered to help out with the event. With more than 40 exhibitors coming to Dunbar, the team is hoping to attract more than 4,000 visitors. Exhibitors this year even include London’s Science Museum SIGNtific Team and the Natural History Museum.

Over at the Bleachingfield Community Centre, activities are free with the University of Edinburgh’s Scottish Science and Technology Roadshow ‘SCI-Fun’ taking over the two halls for the weekend with 50 interactive science activities. Dunbar Library is also supporting SciFest and will open all day Saturday with storytelling and craft activities.

Dee Davidson, marine biologist and the driving force behind SciFest, said: “The response this year has been brilliant and we’ve got something for everyone. We’ve got three local book clubs discussing a book on a scientific theme with specialist scientists joining their discussions. The Molecule Hunt is back which challenges children to find and identify 17 themed molecules within 17 shops and businesses in Dunbar.

“The Gibb Room in Dunbar Library will host three evening events for adults - Dunbar Conversation, Forensic Fiction with the Lennoxlove Book Festival and a Cafe Scientifique. Plus we wanted more teenagers and adults to come so we’re very excited to have SCI-FUN and storytellers from the Scottish Storytelling Centre with us.”

SciFest was originally the idea of Dee and deaf polymer chemist Dr Audrey Cameron back in 2011.

Dee explained: “Using Audrey’s connections in the deaf community, our shows on the Viridor stage will be interpreted in British sign language.”
