Accident record shows need to upgrade A1 south of Dunbar

Councillor Michael Veitch

New figures released reveal the “urgent need” for the Scottish Government to upgrade the A1 between Dunbar and the English Border to dual carriageway, say Conservative politicians.

They stress that the number of accidents and deaths nearly triple on a single carriageway section of the route compared to the dualled sections over the last 10 years.

Councillor Michael Veitch - pictured - Conservative member for Dunbar and East Linton, said figures also showed that the accident rate for the single carriageway sections was 15.61 accidents per 100 million vehicle kilometres, while the accident rate for the dual carriageway parts was 11.99 accidents per 100 million vehicle kilometres.

Mr Veitch said: “These figures will be of no surprise to anyone who regularly uses this stretch of road. There is already a strong economic and tourism case for dualling the A1 south of Innerwick junction however these figures also reveal that there is an even stronger case on safety grounds.”
