War veteran Dr Tom Renouf, Musselburgh with the watch belonging to Heinrich Luitpold Himmler who was Reichsfhrer of the Schutzstaffel, a military commander, and a leading member of the Nazi Party of Nazi Germany.

A watch worn by one of Hitler’s most trusted commanders has helped to transport schoolchildren in Musselburgh back in time.

Once owned by Heinrich Himmler, the broken timepiece was used to bring history to life when local World War Two veteran Tom Renouf visited Loretto School last week.

After planting a cross in the school’s Field of Remembrance, Dr Renouf spoke to youngsters about his own frontline experiences - before outlining the sinister significance of the German army issue watch.

As a private then an officer in the Black Watch, Dr Renouf fought in Normandy, Holland and the Ardennes, serving with distinction and being among the first to cross the Rhine.

The watch - now promised to the Black Watch Museum in Perth - came into his possession when he and other members of the 51st Highland Division captured the former Gestapo and SS leader at the end of the war, without realising who he was.

Now 86, Dr Renouf was only 19 in 1945 when he was given the watch by a fellow soldier in return for 300 cigarettes.
