Sophie bowls ’em over
Sophie Langlands with her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Jim McLeod.
A FORMER champion bowler from Musselburgh has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Sophie Langlands received centenary congratulations surrounded by her family, which includes three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She came to East Lothian from Dalmellington in Ayrshire when she was 12 years old.
Sophie met and married John Langlands at Musselburgh Congregational Church on July 14, 1937.
She was one of the driving forces on the local bowling scene and helped establish Musselburgh Municipal Bowling Club at Fisherrow.
As well as administrating the club’s leagues, Sophie’s talent saw her win the Scottish ladies pairs title twice and the Scottish fours. She enjoyed playing the sport until the age of 82.
The sprightly centenarian was joined in the celebrations by her brother, Ben Tyson (97), who lives in Dalkeith with his wife, Grace.
