Musselburgh Care home plans in jeopardy
TESCO's former site in Mall Avenue, Musselburgh
Plans for a new care home and day centre for the elderly in Musselburgh could be abandoned by East Lothian Council.
Opposition SNP councillors have accused the council’s Labour-led administration of “rowing back” on its guarantee to provide the facility on the site of the town’s old Tesco store.
The council confirmed this week that the development - included in its capital programme for 2017/18 - might not go ahead if the “model of care” in East Lothian continues to shift away from care homes towards care in the home.
Councillor Donald Grant (pictured), spokesman for health and social care, told the News: “Because of budget pressures, we are looking at savings right across the board and we are not committing ourselves to anything in the medium to long term.
“The model of care for older people is moving away from care homes and more and more local authorities are looking at keeping older people at home, rather than in care homes.
“Given the financial climate that is something we will have to look at.
“The Musselburgh care home is in our 2017/18 capital budget, but if we can shift the model of care to keeping people in their homes we might not have to build it.”
