Block contract for respite places at Leuchie is rejected
Leuchie House, near North Berwick
A MOTION by Labour councillors to negotiate a block contract with Leuchie House near North Berwick to offset the shortfall in respite places for physically disabled people in the county was turned down by East Lothian Council on Tuesday.
An amendment, put forward by SNP Council Leader Paul McLennan, stated that the local authority was leading the development of a multi-agency East Lothian Respite Strategy which would lead to improvements in short breaks for local residents.
After a vote, with 15 in favour and eight abstentions, it was agreed to “continue to discuss current respite opportunities” with Leuchie and to get officers to report back to the council on completion of the respite strategy.
All parties acknowledged and applauded the “tremendous” work done by carers and praised Leuchie as a “valuable resource” which has expanded to cater for people with othern kinds of physical disabilities, not only multiple sclerosis.
Councillor Willie Innes, Labour Group Leader, in proposing the motion said: “I am sure all of us support, appreciate and applaud the fantastic work carried out by carers right across East Lothian.”
