Compensation battle for Woolworths staff
Woolworths, High Street, North Berwick
Former Woolworths employees in North Berwick look set to miss out on a compensation deal which will see their counterparts in Musselburgh awarded eight weeks pay.
The shopworkers union Usdaw has won compensation worth up to £67m for more than 24,000 employees made redundant when the firm collapsed at the end of 2008.
But the judgement, released this week, excludes 3,000 staff at 180 smaller stores — such as North Berwick — where fewer than 20 redundancies were made.
In the case of Musselburgh, where 24 jobs were lost, former workers will be eligible for a windfall of up to £3,200 — based on an award of 60 days (or eight weeks) pay, capped at £400 a week.
Usdaw says it is already seeking legal advice about the “injustice” of the judgement for smaller stores, with a view to lodging an appeal.
