A three-foot long snake put a spanner in the works at a Macmerry garage after being sited slithering in the back of a car by a shocked mechanic.
The orange-coloured, non-venomous Corn Snake was first spotted by Gordon Aikman (52), who was emptying a car which had been impounded by police.
The mechanic, of Glenburn Road in North Berwick, initially thought that the reptile was made of rubber — until it moved and stuck its tongue out at him!
Speaking to the News from his workplace at the T&J Wallace garage on Westbank Road, he said: "It was in the boot of a Citroen Xsara and must have made its way into one of the back panels when I was moving things about.
"I had no idea whether it was poisonous or not and have to admit that I got a real fright — it's not the sort of thing that happens every day."
