The romance of the wartime tea dance will be making a comeback at Musselburgh’s Old Town Hall this weekend.

Volunteers at the new Musselburgh Museum are joining forces with professionals from Flyright Dance Company to give visitors a real taste of 1940s glamour.

“Going to the Dancing: Musselburgh’s Tea Dance” takes place on Saturday May 14 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm as part of the nation’s inaugural Festival of Museums, being spearheaded by Museums Galleries Scotland.

Families are encouraged to dress up in 40s costumes for a chance of being crowned “best dressed” in the vintage fashion show.

The aim is to get everyone jiving and jitterbugging, with the dance company on hand to teach the necessary moves.

Joanne Orr, Chief Executive of Museums Galleries Scotland, said: “The first ever Festival of Museums is a celebration of Scottish culture and all that is fantastic about Scotland, with events that explore our past, present and future.”

“It highlights Scotland’s museums and galleries as great year-round visitor attractions with something for people of all ages to enjoy.”

East Lothian highlights include breakdancing beats at John Muir’s Birthplace in Dunbar and music and dance from the swinging 60s at Prestongrange Museum, Prestonpans.

The event in Musselburgh is free, with donations being accepted, and places must be booked in advance.
