Roman link to Inveresk explored in talks
“Discovery by Trowel and Error” is the subject for the first in a trilogy of talks being held in conjunction with the Romans exhibition at Musselburgh Museum.
The illustrated talk by Andrew Robertson, East Lothian Council’s archaeology and heritage officer, takes place in St Peter’s Church Hall on Wednesday, January 18 at 7pm.
Musselburgh Museum and Heritage Group invites residents across the county to find out more about East Lothian’s fascinating Roman past in this free event.
It will explain why recent high-profile discoveries in Musselburgh are just “the tip of the iceberg” and consider what still remains to be unearthed.
The process of how such discoveries are made and the amount of archaeological work that takes place around East Lothian and Scotland — much of it unheralded — will also be discussed.
Much of what we know about the Romans in East Lothian is centred around the fort at Inveresk, while the remainder of the county seems to offer very little evidence of Roman settlement or indeed interaction with the Romans.
The talk will explain how the sites of major local excavations, and other seemingly uninteresting sites, can throw light on this and provide answers to other questions.
