East Lothian’s role in Cold War is revealed

The role of the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune in the Cold War will be showcased as part of an event at the top East Lothian attraction during February half term from February 11 to 19.
The Cold War Experience marks 50 years since one of the most important episodes of the era – the Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the USA and USSR ever came to nuclear war.
From the late 1950s until the late 1970s, the museum’s East Fortune home was used as a storage facility in the event of hostilities between East and West.
Initially, emergency services vehicles, including Green Goddess fire engines, were stored in the hangars that today house the museum’s aviation collections.
The airfield’s runways were also extended in case the United States required the site as a military airbase to house the fighter aircraft that would escort B-29 bombers.
