You may be aware from TV and newspaper reports in recent years, that our iconic “seabird cities”, are in serious trouble. Those iconic bird-crowded cliffs we love to visit on Summer boat trips are becoming silent.
Urgent research is being carried out into the causes of declines in many of our familiar sea bird species.
Over fishing for human consumption and climate change are thought to be the main causes. More frequent storms may be preventing birds from finding fish at critical times of chick rearing.
Changes in sea temperature may be causing fish to change their distribution ranges, forcing birds to hunt ever farther away from traditional breeding cliffs.
