Volunteers wanted for stroke charit in East Lothian
What’s your New Year’s resolution? Join a gym? Give up chocolate?
Why not decide to make a real difference in your local community this year by volunteering?
Leading medical charity Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is appealing to people in East Lothian to sign up for one of the many interesting and rewarding volunteer roles available locally.
More than 1,000 already give the charity 120,000 hours each year to support community stroke services and raise funds for the charity so why not join the team in 2012? You could help people who have had a stroke or are living with heart failure or chronic chest illness to enjoy a better quality of life.
As an accredited ‘Investing in Volunteers’ award holder CHSS offers its volunteers the highest standard of training and care so anyone giving their time to the charity can be sure of being valued and appreciated as well as receiving excellent training.
Volunteers undertake such roles as helping at a local group — supporting people who have had a stroke, driving people to and from a group or supporting them on a one to one basis in their homes or in the local community.
There is also a Heart Failure Volunteer Service supporting people living with the social impact of this condition and volunteer befrienders are urgently needed in the Lothians.
The charity’s shops in Dunbar, Haddington and North Berwick are always on the lookout for more helpers to serve customers, sort and merchandise stock or provide admin back up.
You don’t need to make a big commitment; all you do need are lots of enthusiasm and a little free time.
The charity funds vital medical research and provides a range of local services for people with chest, heart or stroke illness and their families including three volunteer stroke service groups meeting in North Berwick, Musselburgh and Dalkeith.
There are also CHSS stroke support nurses and a heart failure volunteer service. Confidential, independent advice and information for patients and carers is available from their advice line nurses for the price of a local call (0845 077 6000) and there is a website where information and useful links can be found and publications and videos downloaded at www.chss.org.uk.
Volunteering gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and work as part of a team. You can put something back and help CHSS to work towards a healthier future for Scotland. Perhaps most importantly, you can enjoy yourself!
