About one hundred and twenty of the poor people of Musselburgh participated in the annual distribution of Dr Bruce’s Fund at the Town Hall on Saturday morning last, when the trustees in attendance were Provost Millar, Bailie Constable, and the Rev Wm Edie BD while Mr Richardson, Town Clerk, and Police inspector Findlay were also in attendance. A new form of entertainment hit Musselburgh last week when the youngsters of the local Joint Youth Group got together to present a revue “We’re a’ Here”. Their venture met with the success it deserved by attracting large audiences to Inveresk Church Hall on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. The show, a mixture of songs, sketches, dancing and humour, was written and produced by local civil servant Rob Walker, who did the announcing. There was a big cast of around 45 taking part in the different items and another two dozen or more helpers behind the scenes.

1988

East Lothian MP John Home Robertson has hit out at shock plans to lay of 39 workers at the open cast mining site at Blindwells, near Tranent. The Labour MP is furious at the decision, which comes only weeks after British Coal promised continuity of employment to secure a major extension to present operations. The men, members of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, are employed by Fairclough Parkinson Ltd, who operate the site for British Coal.
