Tesco and Sainsbury’s battle over new store site

There were calls for a delay into a decision on two major supermarket plans at Haddington for the outcome of a study into a vision of the town centre for the future.
Both Haddington and District Amenity Society (HADAS) and Phil Pritchett from Tesco asked for the proposals to be put on hold as the battle of the supermarket giants continued at a meeting of East Lothian Council’s planning committee on Tuesday.
But it will be up to a full meeting of the local authority on February 28 to decide on the planning applications from Tesco and Sainbury’s, with visits to the sites taking place on February 24.
Sainsbury’s is hoping to get the go-ahead in principle for a retail store and petrol filling station at Gateside West, while Tesco wants to erect a store and petrol filling station at Gateside East.
Joe Forte, Chairman of Haddington Business Association, supported Sainsbury’s plan over the Tesco project, saying: “As stated by us on many occasions now, the worst case scenario for Haddington would be for Tesco’s to leave their town centre location and replace it with smaller commercial and residential units.”
