Tax credit blow to low income households
County MP Fiona O’Donnell is warning that tax credit changes will see low income families in East Lothian lose almost £4000 per year.
Hard working, low income parents in the county face losing their £3,870 a-year tax credit unless they significantly increase their weekly working hours.
Parents can currently qualify for Working Tax Credit if they do at least 16 hours per week. However, Tory-led Government changes, to take effect from April 6, mean that threshold will be raised to 24 hours per week.
Official figures show that 225 households across East Lothian will be affected and 410 local children will lose out as a result of these changes.
Ms O’Donnell said: “These changes are deeply unfair and will hurt local families on low incomes hardest.
“Hundreds of children across East Lothian risk losing out, as the tax credits their hard working parents rely on are taken away.
