Saving for the future
East Lothian folk are savers, recent research has shown.
According to the first Bank of Scotland Rural Savings Report, the county is sixth in Scotland with the highest average savings’ balance as a proportion of earnings and fifth for the average savings’ balances.
The research shows that savers in rural Scotland are, not only outsaving their counterparts in urban areas, but are also managing to put away more in relation to their earnings.
The average savings’ balance as a percentage of average earnings for East Lothian is 32 per cent, with female earnings 36 per cent and male earnings, 31 per cent. Scottish Borders tops the table at 41 per cent, 53 per cent and 34 per cent, followed by Highlands, Perth & Kinross, Aberdeenshire, Argyll & Bute.
The average savings’ balance for East Lothian is £8,545, with Aberdeenshire highest at £10,191, then Perth & Kinross (£9,230), Scottish Borders (£8,972), Highlands (£8,830).
