Garden plan starts to grow on residents

It is hoped that a plan to make the Musselburgh area ‘Incredibly Edible’ will bear fruit with vegetables planted along the River Esk and a community orchard created at Newhailes industrial estate.
The Transition Town Musselburgh group, which is behind the idea, is hoping to involve more local people in the project and a successful meeting took place at Fisherrow Yacht Club.
Members aim to make as many spaces as possible available for the community to grow its own fruit, vegetables and herbs whether on the High Street, at the riverside, on local industrial estates, at community centres, churches — even roundabouts, back greens and gable ends.
Stephanie Kerr, a local community planner officer based at Musselburgh East Community Learning Centre, explained: “Many types of fruit and vegetables can be grown in Scotland, even in our cold climate and sometimes in very small spaces. All that is needed to get growing is a little bit of imagination.”
Anyone who would like to get involved with the group and project should phone Stephanie on 0131 653 4065 or visit Transition Town Musselburgh on Facebook to get all the latest news and dates for events.
