Focus on street design

A WORKSHOP has been organised to give residents of the Parsonspool area in Dunbar the chance to say how they would like their street developed for the future.

The event, which will take place in the Gibb Room at the library on Saturday, February 11, from 9am to noon, has been organised by the group Sustaining Dunbar.

Morag Haddow, a member of Sustaining Dunbar, explained: “Our streets have long been dominated by traffic issues — speeding cars, parking spaces and crossing points. Yet these are areas where children used to play and neighbours used to chat.

“Of course in the 21st century we need to make room for cars too but this need not be at the expense of everyone else.”

At the street design workshop, the national organisation Sustrans will present a vision for streets where people, not cars, are a priority.

Ms Haddow said: “We understand that East Lothian Council is planning to start work to improve the lighting and road and pavement surfaces in Parsonspool in the next few months and it makes sense to use this opportunity to focus specifically on simple changes which could be incorporated into the roadworks to make the street look more welcoming. The Saturday morning workshop will spend some time looking at inspiration for people-friendly streets from around the world, then focus on ideas for Parsonspool.”

Contact judy@sustainingdunbar.org to book a place on the workshop. Places are limited and priority will be given to Parsonspool residents.
